Why Lakshadweep is India's Best-Kept Island Secret

Lakshadweep (meaning 'a hundred thousand islands' in Malayalam) is India's smallest Union Territory and its most ecologically sensitive. The 36 coral atolls in the Arabian Sea are home to stunning lagoons, pristine beaches, and some of the finest coral reefs in Asia. Unlike the Maldives, Lakshadweep is rarely overcrowded — strict permit requirements and limited accommodation keep visitor numbers low, making it a genuinely exclusive experience for Indian group travellers.

Agatti Island: The Gateway to Lakshadweep

Agatti has the only airport in Lakshadweep, connected by flights from Kochi. The island's lagoon is shallow and crystal-clear — ideal for snorkelling, kayaking, and swimming. The reef system around Agatti is exceptional for divers. Island hopping from Agatti to Bangaram and Kadmat is easily arranged through permitted tour operators. Most group packages are based out of Agatti and Bangaram.

Bangaram Island: The Exclusive Atoll Resort

Bangaram is an uninhabited atoll with a single resort — making it one of the most exclusive island experiences in India. The Bangaram Island Resort (operated by CGH Earth) sits amidst a stunning circular lagoon with walking-distance access to the reef on all sides. Scuba diving at Bangaram is world-class. Dolphins, sea turtles, and vibrant reef fish are commonly spotted. This is the ideal choice for group tours seeking luxury isolation.

Kadmat and Kavaratti: Culture Meets the Sea

Kadmat Island has both an east lagoon (calm and ideal for swimming) and a west reef (exciting for diving). It's accessible by ship from Kochi and is a popular stop on multi-island group packages. Kavaratti is the capital island — with a beautiful mosque, the marine aquarium, and water sports facilities. The lagoon at Kavaratti is particularly stunning for glass-bottom boat rides.

Permit Requirements and Travel Rules for Lakshadweep

Entry to Lakshadweep requires a permit from the Union Territory Administration. Indian nationals need an entry permit, while foreign nationals need an additional tourist permit. Alcohol is not permitted on the islands except in the Bangaram resort. Pork is not served anywhere. Lakshadweep's fragile coral ecosystem means strict rules on reef contact, fishing, and waste disposal. All group tours must be arranged through registered operators.

Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep

October to May is the recommended travel window. December to March offers the calmest sea conditions, best underwater visibility, and most pleasant beach weather. The monsoon (June–September) brings rough seas and most resorts suspend operations. Lakshadweep's peak season is December to February, so book all accommodation and transport well in advance — options are extremely limited.

How to Plan a Lakshadweep Group Tour

Fly Kochi–Agatti (2 hours) or take the overnight passenger ship from Kochi. Island-hopping packages covering Agatti, Bangaram, and Kadmat for 5–7 nights are the most popular format. Activities include scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, and glass-bottom boat rides. TravelBuddy offers fully arranged Lakshadweep GIT packages with permits, accommodation, and all activities included.
