Lakshadweep is India’s least-known and perhaps most extraordinary island destination. Located 200–400 km off the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea, this Union Territory of 36 coral atolls and islands has lagoons of mesmerising clarity, untouched coral reefs, and an atmosphere of complete natural tranquility that has made it India’s answer to the Maldives — and in the opinion of many who have visited both, its equal in beauty.
Why Lakshadweep Rivals the Maldives
Lakshadweep’s coral lagoons are among the world’s clearest waters — visibility up to 40 metres in some areas. The coral reefs surrounding the islands are some of the best-preserved in the entire Indian Ocean, home to over 600 species of fish, sea turtles, manta rays, and reef sharks. Unlike the commercially developed Maldives, Lakshadweep remains almost entirely undeveloped — no crowds, no luxury resort villages, just pure nature.
Bangaram Island: The Crown Jewel
Bangaram Island Resort is Lakshadweep’s only luxury resort property, operated by CGHEARTH on an uninhabited island accessible only by boat or seaplane from Agatti. With just 30 cottages on a pristine island of white sand and turquoise water, Bangaram is one of India’s most exclusive retreats. Excellent house reef snorkelling, diving, and kayaking are available directly from the beach.
Agatti & Kavaratti Islands
Agatti Island has the only airport in Lakshadweep, with daily flights from Kochi. Its beautiful lagoon and the Government-run beach resort offer affordable accommodation options. Kavaratti, the Union Territory’s capital, has beautiful mosques, a Government Aquarium (one of the best in India), and an excellent water sports complex. Minicoy Island, the southernmost, has a charming lighthouse and a distinct Mahl (Maldivian-related) culture.
How to Visit Lakshadweep: Entry Permits & Logistics
Lakshadweep requires an Entry Permit for all Indian citizens. Permits are issued through the Lakshadweep Administration via tour operators like TravelBuddy — we handle the entire permit process. Access is by flight to Agatti (from Kochi, 1.5 hours) or by cruise ship from Kochi (18 hours). The number of tourists permitted on each island is strictly capped, ensuring the pristine environment is protected.
