Why Uzbekistan is the New Hotspot for Indian Group Travellers
Uzbekistan burst onto the Indian travel radar when it introduced visa-free entry for Indian passport holders in 2023. The country's extraordinary Silk Road heritage — the turquoise-tiled domes, minarets, and bazaars of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva — has been world-famous for centuries but was rarely visited. Now, with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai and no visa requirements, Indian group tours to Uzbekistan are growing rapidly.
Samarkand: The Heart of the Silk Road
Samarkand was the crown of Tamerlane's (Timur's) empire and one of the ancient world's most magnificent cities. The Registan — three enormous madrasas facing a vast central square, each covered in turquoise and gold tilework — is among the most visually stunning sites anywhere in the world. The Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum (Timur's tomb), Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, and Bibi-Khanym Mosque are all extraordinary. The nightly light show at the Registan is a spectacular bonus.
Bukhara: The Perfectly Preserved Silk Road City
Bukhara's old city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's best-preserved medieval Islamic cities. The Po-i-Kalon complex (the Kalon Minaret and mosque), Lyabi-Hauz plaza, Ark Citadel, and the covered bazaars of the Toki trading domes are all magnificent. Bukhara has excellent craft workshops where groups can watch artisans creating silk ikat textiles, embroidery, miniature painting, and ceramics — fantastic for shopping.
Khiva: The Ancient Walled City
Khiva's Itchan Kala (inner walled city) is a remarkably complete 19th-century Silk Road city, still inhabited and remarkably well preserved. The Kalta Minor minaret (left unfinished), Tosh-Hovli Palace, and Islam-Khodja minaret are among the highlights. Khiva has a slightly more intimate and less touristy feel than Samarkand or Bukhara — perfect for group photography and evening walks within the ancient walls.
Tashkent: Modern Capital with Ancient Depths
Tashkent, Uzbekistan's capital, is where most India–Uzbekistan flights arrive. The Chorsu Bazaar (a vibrant traditional market under a striking blue dome), the Independence Square, Khast Imam religious complex, and the Soviet-era metro stations (artistic masterpieces in themselves) are worth a half–full day of exploration. Most group tours use Tashkent as the gateway and end point.
Food and Culture in Uzbekistan for Indian Travellers
Uzbek cuisine has deep cultural parallels with Indian food — the national dish plov (pilaf rice with meat and vegetables) is similar to Indian biryani and will feel familiar. Samsa (meat-filled pastries like samosas), lagman noodle soup, and shashlik (kebabs) are staples. Vegetarians can enjoy bread (non), salads, and dairy products, though options are more limited than in India. The culture of hospitality, chai, and bazaar life will resonate strongly with Indian visitors.
