Varanasi: The Soul of India

Varanasi — also known as Kashi or Banaras — is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and for Hindus, the holiest of all. The city's 88 ghats (stepped riverbanks) stretching along the Ganges are the stage for an extraordinary theatre of life: pilgrims bathing at dawn, funeral pyres burning at Manikarnika Ghat, priests performing the nightly Ganga Aarti, and silk weavers crafting Banarasi sarees in narrow alleyways. No Indian group tour is complete without a visit.

The Ghats: Varanasi's Living Theatre

The ghats are the soul of Varanasi. Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most famous — the venue for the spectacular Ganga Aarti ceremony each evening, where priests perform elaborate fire rituals to the Ganges. Assi Ghat is popular for early morning yoga and meditation. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are the burning ghats, where cremations occur around the clock. A sunrise boat ride across all the ghats is the most iconic Varanasi experience.

Temples and Sacred Sites of Varanasi

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) is Varanasi's most sacred site — rebuilt and expanded, it now forms a grand corridor connecting to Gyanvapi Mosque. Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple and Tulsi Manas Temple are also significant pilgrimage sites. Sarnath, just 10km away, is where Buddha delivered his first sermon — the Dhamek Stupa and archaeological museum are essential stops.

The Old City and Banarasi Culture

The narrow galis (lanes) of Varanasi's old city are a sensory maze of temples, silk shops, chai stalls, and sacred cows. A guided walk through the old city is essential for groups — navigating the alleys without a local guide is nearly impossible. Varanasi is famous for Banarasi silk sarees, the tabla and classical music, and the legendary Banarasi paan, thandai, and lassi.

Ganga Aarti: An Experience of a Lifetime

The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat every evening is one of India's most powerful spectacles. Seven priests simultaneously perform the fire ritual with brass lamps, incense, conch shells, and chanting, while hundreds of pilgrims and tourists gather along the ghats and in boats on the river. Arriving 30–45 minutes early ensures a good viewing position. The aarti takes approximately 45 minutes.

Best Time to Visit Varanasi

October to March is the ideal time — cool, clear weather perfect for exploring the ghats. Dev Deepawali (the full moon of Kartik month, typically November) is one of Varanasi's most magical nights — thousands of oil lamps float on the Ganges and the ghats are lit with diyas. Avoid May–June when temperatures exceed 45°C. Maha Shivaratri (February–March) sees massive pilgrim crowds.
