Kashmir. The name alone evokes something — a longing, a dream, an image of extraordinary natural beauty. The valley of Kashmir has inspired India’s greatest poets, painters, and film-makers for centuries, and for good reason: it is breathtakingly beautiful in every season. The calm Dal Lake mirroring snow-capped Himalayan peaks, the meadows of wildflowers in summer, the crimson chinar leaves of autumn, and the pristine white landscapes of winter — Kashmir is a destination that gives endlessly.

Srinagar: The Venice of the East

Srinagar is Kashmir’s enchanting capital, built around the legendary Dal Lake. A shikara (traditional carved wooden boat) ride on the lake at sunrise is one of India’s most magical travel experiences. Staying on a heritage houseboat on Dal Lake — furnished with walnut-wood carvings and hand-embroidered textiles — is quintessential Kashmir. The Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi) are masterpieces of Persian garden design laid out by Mughal emperors. The ancient Shankaracharya Temple on a hilltop overlooking the valley is deeply significant for Hindu visitors.

Gulmarg: Asia’s Premier Ski Resort

Gulmarg (Meadow of Flowers) sits at 2,650 metres and is both India’s most beautiful summer meadow and its top ski resort. In winter, the Gulmarg Gondola — one of Asia’s highest and longest cable car rides — takes you to Apharwat Peak at 3,980 metres, where some of the best off-piste skiing in Asia awaits. In summer, the meadow is carpeted with wildflowers and excellent for horse riding, golf (Asia’s highest golf course), and cycling.

Pahalgam: The Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam is Kashmir’s most scenic valley town, set at the confluence of the Lidder and Sheshnag rivers. The Betaab Valley (made famous by the Bollywood film of the same name), Aru Valley, and Chandanwari (starting point for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage) are the key attractions. Pahalgam is also the base for some of Kashmir’s best trekking routes, including the famous Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.

Kashmir’s Handicrafts: A Shopping Paradise

Kashmir produces some of India’s finest handicrafts — Pashmina shawls (the world’s softest wool), hand-knotted silk carpets, papier-mâché boxes and vases, walnut-wood furniture, and the legendary Kashmiri Kani shawls (one of the world’s most labour-intensive textiles, taking months to weave). A shopping afternoon in Srinagar’s old city is both an aesthetic and cultural education.
