Your Bhutan adventure begins at Phuentsholing, the energetic border town separating India and Bhutan across the Torsa river. Complete border formalities at the immigration office and cross into Bhutan, where the change in atmosphere — cleaner air, quieter streets, pine-scented forests — is palpable almost immediately. Begin the approximately 5-hour mountain drive to Thimphu, winding through the lower foothills and ascending through subtropical forests. The road follows river gorges and offers views of terraced hillsides and remote mountain villages. Arrive in Thimphu by early evening and settle into your accommodation, with time to stroll the Clock Tower area before dinner.
