Your Road Explorer journey begins at Phuentsholing, Bhutan's main land border with India on the Bengal plains. Complete immigration formalities, cross the border gate, and begin the 5-hour mountain ascent to Thimphu. The road immediately begins climbing through subtropical forests, passing the Chukha hydropower dam and reservoir, river gorges carved by the Wang Chhu, and small Bhutanese villages where prayer flags and white chortens mark every settlement. The gradual ascent through the Himalayan foothills feels like passing through successive climate zones — tropical lowland to temperate mountain valley. Arrive in Thimphu by early evening and settle in for the night.
